On October 4th, 2006, the I-95 Mobility 2000 project
office completed the third of eight (8) projects along the Palm Beach
County I-95 corridor. This project began south of SR 80, and included
the Southern Boulevard Interchange from Parker Avenue to Gem Lake Drive,
ending just north of SR 80.
The $34.4 million project, which began in March of 2002, improved the
interchange of SR 80 and I-95, to allow for the widening of I-95 as well
as for future railroad improvements to the area. The work included the
installation of two (2) new bridges on Southern Boulevard, the raising
and widening of SR 80, and the widening of I-95 with provisions for an
HOV lane to be added at a later date. The project also included drainage
improvements, retaining walls, signing and pavement marking, lighting,
landscaping, irrigation and communications elements.
Archer Western Contractors were awarded the contract, and given an original
contract time of 950 days for completion. Due to the hurricanes of 2004
and 2005, and in addition to other inclement weather, the project was
extended by an additional 73 days. However, the contractor completed the
project ahead of schedule, utilizing only 941 out of the 1,023 contract
days allowed. The project also finished under budget of the original contract
amount by approximately $150,000. |
